Evolutionary game theory (EGT) applies the mathematics of strategic interaction to biological populations. Unlike classical game theory, players do not choose strategies rationally; instead, natural selection favors strategies that yield higher fitness. John Maynard Smith and George Price introduced the concept of the Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) in 1973.
